Mindful Yoga Therapy for Trauma Recovery, A Yoga Teacher Training • Hamden, CT

A Training for Yoga Teachers

Yoga teachers have a special responsibility to handle all their interactions with students with great care. However, honing the special skill set required to work with students who have faced trauma requires a thorough understanding and special sensitivity of the unique needs of this community.  As the number of veterans with trauma-related difficulties grows, so does the need for yoga teachers who understand these issues.  Veterans Yoga Project offers an extraordinary opportunity for intensive training in a proven, mindful approach to teaching yoga to veterans and others who are recovering from posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related psychological difficulties.

Join Dr. Daniel J. Libby as he shares the experiences that shaped the development of the Mindful Yoga Therapy for Recovery from Trauma program.  In this three-day teacher training, we will explore:

  • The development, course, and consequences of trauma-related disorders
  • The psychotherapeutic treatment of trauma-related disorders and how Mindful Yoga Therapy fits into an integrative treatment approach
  • Special considerations and cautions when providing yoga therapy to veterans and other trauma-affected individuals
  • Specific practices, guiding principles, and resources found to be helpful for veterans coping with trauma, including a detailed treatment manual with an empirically-informed, clinically-tested 12-week protocol.

The Veterans Yoga Project training consists of a balance of practice and lecture/discussion.  At the end of the training, participants will understand the symptoms of post-traumatic stress and other trauma-related disorders, how those symptoms are related to underlying neurobiology, and how to use this understanding to most effectively teach mindful yoga therapy to veterans and active-duty military.

Feathered Pipe Magic

Peace in the garden at Feathered PipeAs yoga teachers, our ability to teach and help our students is intricately tied to our ability to be clear and mindful. This is especially true for yoga teachers whose students suffer from PTSD and other trauma-related psychological difficulties. The importance of self-care cannot be over-emphasized. We all need time to take care of ourselves and to be taken care of.

Therefore, Dan and the Veterans Yoga Project faculty also invite you to immerse your “self” in the Feathered Pipe’s nurturing atmosphere of rejuvenation and reinvigoration. In addition to deepening your own practice through daily meditation, pranayama, asana, and Yoga Nidra, you’ll have the opportunity for beautiful mountain hiking, cold-lake swimming, hot-tub soaking, amazing star-gazing, healing massage, and meaningful interpersonal connections.

Our intention is for participants to leave feeling reinvigorated; with an understanding of the psychological and neurobiological underpinnings of trauma, PTSD, and yoga; and the skills and resources necessary to work within a healthcare environment to provide Mindful Yoga Therapy for individuals recovering from PTSD and other trauma-related disorders.

In addition, thanks to the Give Back Yoga Foundation, participants will be given a host of practice materials that have been produced specifically for veterans coping with trauma including: the Mindful Yoga Therapy Practice Guide.

*25 CEUs available for yoga teachers registered with Yoga Alliance

Please Note: This is NOT a retreat designed to treat people with PTSD, but to train yoga teachers who wish to more effectively assist those suffering from PTSD.

Daniel Libby, PhD, Veterans Yoga Project

Daniel J. Libby, PhD, RYT-200

Dan’s work in body-mind healing began in 1983, when as an entrepreneurial 8-year old he did reflexology on the front lawn for the guests of the Feathered Pipe Ranch for 10 cents/minute.  Since then he has learned and practiced a wide variety of therapeutic skills first as a massage therapist and bodyworker, then as a clinical psychologist, and then as a yoga teacher.  Currently, Dan keeps busy teaching yoga, conducting psychotherapy, consulting on research, running Veterans Yoga Project, and being a dad.

Dan taught mindful yoga therapy to veterans recovering from posttraumatic stress at the West Haven VA for two-and-a-half years, and then at a rehabilitation program for active-duty military for 9 months.  He is co-author of the Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans Recovering from Trauma practice guide and training program.

Daniel recently completed the embodyoga® Teacher Training and serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Feathered Pipe Foundation, the nonprofit educational foundation and yoga retreat center.
