Sample Breathing Practice

In yoga, breathing techniques are used to cleanse, calm, and strengthen the nervous system, and thus increase vitality. In clinical psychology, breathing retraining is commonly used as an anxiety management technique.  Breath as a bridge between the body and mind is a core aspect of any therapeutic yoga program.  In our Veterans yoga classes the use of conscious attention to the breath, and the use of yogic breathing techniques is central.  The breath is attended to for its own therapeutic value (Parasympathetic nervous system activation) but also as a tool to cultivate greater awareness (mindfulness).

Below is a sample breathing practice.  It takes 7 minutes, 15 seconds.
